Available

Dominic Power established a fellowship training programme in 2012. The programme has been over-subscribed, leading to a competitive selection process. Candidates from orthopaedic, plastic and neurosurgery are welcome to apply. The timetable and job description are available on request.

Due to the popularity of the 12-month placement, Dominic has also established multiple other platforms for trainees to consider.

UK Training Fellowship

12 months

Exposure to techniques involving nerve transfer, nerve reconstruction, tetraplegia, spasticity, nerve tumours and the management of nerve pain.

UK Visiting Fellowship

2-6 weeks

Short clinical observerships in nerve surgery and research. Placements are based within the NHS, the HaPPeN team in the Institute of Translational Medicine and in the private sector at The Nerve Clinic.

Overseas Fellowship

variable

A limited number of training fellowships are provided for surgeons from overseas. Recent candidates have travelled from the USA, Switzerland, Italy, Ukraine, and Africa.

“Tomas Madura was an academic trainee in plastic surgery in Manchester before taking up the post as nerve fellow in Birmingham. He was appointed as a consultant hand and nerve surgeon in Birmingham in 2018. He continues to maintain his interest in peripheral nerve research and contributes to the activity of the HaPPeN team. He has a specialist interest in paralysis reconstruction using functioning free muscle transfer, brachial plexus injuries and headache surgery.”

“Pieter Jordaan is a South African orthopaedic trauma surgeon who trained in hand surgery at the Upper Limb unit in Wrightington before starting the nerve fellowship in Birmingham in 2018. Following completion of the nerve fellowship in Birmingham he returned to George in South Africa in the private sector where he continues to maintain his interest in peripheral nerve surgery.”

“Samuel George is the 2019 Birmingham peripheral nerve fellow. He is a senior plastic surgery trainee from Liverpool who is towards the end of his surgical training. He came to the specialist unit in Birmingham to gain exposure to complex peripheral nerve reconstruction techniques including nerve transfer surgery.”
